Thanks to protection efforts, the dolphins today are usually released alive from the nets and the death rate is fairly low. When the purse seine fishery first began around 1960, dolphins (not just spinners) trapped as bycatch were killed-a number estimated at around six million. The dolphins are ensnared along with the tuna. Fishermen look for dolphin pods, knowing they’ll likely be with the tuna they want, and herd them with speedboats into a tight mass before deploying a large net over the pod. Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris) Found in shallower tropical waters across the globe, the spinner dolphins name is well-earned: it is one of only two dolphin species that are known to perform spins along their longitudinal axes as they leap out of the water. In the eastern tropical Pacific, spinner dolphins frequently swim together with schools of yellowfin tuna. Spinner dolphins sexually mature at around eight years old. ![]() Feeding on small fish, squid, and shrimp mostly at night in the open ocean, they return to the shallows during the day to rest and socialize. A single spinning leap can include as many as four. Here they are a great favourite of dolphin. Spinner dolphins are best known for their above-water displays of leaping and spinning several times. Hop aboard Ocean Spirit or Ocean Quest as we go in search of acrobatic spinner dolphins, curious spotted dolphins, and friendly bottlenose dolphins. They are the most abundant dolphin species in the Indian Ocean. Although most commonly found in offshore waters, some spinner dolphin populations also use nearshore areas. Experience the thrill of watching wild dolphins in their natural habitat. Spinner dolphins live in large pods from a few dozen to a thousand or more in tropical and subtropical zones around the world. The bottlenose, characterized by a built-in smile formed by the curvature of its mouth, has become a familiar performer in oceanariums. Like other dolphins, spinners also vocalize with whistles, echolocation clicks, and other sounds. The most widely recognized species are the common and bottlenose dolphins ( Delphinus delphis and Tursiops truncatus, respectively). Biologists also think the dolphins use their moves to communicate, each one signaling something different: “Let’s go” or “Danger!” or “I find you attractive.” ![]() The leaping and spinning likely serve several purposes, including the removal of irksome remoras, fish that latch on to eat parasites. They can spin multiple times in one leap, which can be nearly 10 feet high. It is a member of the family Delphinidae of toothed whales. It is famous for its acrobatic displays in which it spins along its longitudinal axis as it leaps through the air. Skilled acrobats, the small dolphins regularly leap out of the water and perform complicated aerial maneuvers.
